Steps You Should Take Before and After Fumigation
Pest infestation is a very stressful thing to deal with, whether they are termites eating your wood or ants and roaches that just won't quit. Sometimes it is necessary to have tent fumigation to deal with the menace permanently, but success is dependent on what you do before and after fumigation is carried out. Read on to learn more.
Before fumigation
It's important to sit with the fumigation service provider so that you understand exactly what they'll be doing, how long it takes and how you should prepare your home. Most pest management companies have a list you can check off to ensure you don't forget anything. The most important ones include the following:
-
Arrange for alternative accommodation for the family, including pets. Factor in an extra day or two in the timeline the company gives. Pack enough clothing plus extras in case of a mishap. Carry any medication or anything you'll need; you won't be able to come in until the fumigation period is complete
-
Cut plants that are too close to the home, or water them completely and loosely cover them with plastic bags
-
Double-bag or carry away food, including everything in the fridge/freezer, cupboards, pantry, etc. You can leave sealed cans or bottles.
-
Mattresses, seat pillows and clothing should be double-bagged in plastic wrapping or taken away
-
Ensure that your electricity is paid up, as some companies use electricity for the process. Ask the company whether the gas service should be stopped. Turn off all appliances and unplug at the sockets, except the fridge, if it contains food. Ensure sprinklers are turned off as well
Remember that weather conditions and other factors can cause delays in the fumigation schedule, so be flexible and patient to ensure the job is done properly. You'll be much happier in the end.
After fumigation
Exterminators also provide guidelines to follow once you come back home, and these must be followed to the letter. They will tell you when to start cleaning/vacuuming as well as other tasks.
Wash any fabrics or coverings that were exposed to the treatment. If your furniture or mattresses have a funky smell, try airing or vacuuming them. If these fail, hire a cleaning service to deal with upholstery. Wipe down all surfaces properly and reline shelves and drawers. Finally, open your windows to allow free circulation and rid your house of pesticide odours.
Keeping your home pest-free will now be at the top of your list, and you can do this by:
-
removing unnecessary items as you clean thoroughly following fumigation; pests like rats and roaches are attracted to clutter
-
inspecting your home's exterior for possible entry points and sealing them off, includingaround windows and doors, between the wall and roof, along baseboards and around mouldings
