Practical Pest Control Tips That Really Work

What To Do If You Have Mainland Tiger Snakes On Your Property

The Mainland or Common Tiger snake is responsible for many bites in Australia.  One reason for this is that the snake is found in some densely populated areas, being attracted to outer urban houses and farms.  Snakes don't hunt people, nor do they seek to attack them.  Most bites occur because the snake has been accidently trodden on or intentionally picked up.

However, a venomous Tiger snake doesn't make the most desirable house guest.  So, what can you do to discourage Tiger snakes from entering your home and what can you do if you find one?

Mainland Tiger snake

Tiger snakes are quite large, growing to around 2 metres.  They are usually striped or banded (hence their common name) in pale yellow and black, with a slender body and bullet-shaped head.

Most bites occur when the snakes are disturbed by gardeners or walkers.  The bite of a Tiger snake is venomous and can result in death if the victim isn't treated quickly.

Tiger snakes are nocturnal hunters, feeding on small mammals and rodents, reptiles, frogs, and birds.  Although they hunt primarily in grass and vegetation, they may venture into houses or outbuildings in search of shelter and food.

How to keep Mainland Tiger snakes away from your property

Never try to catch a snake yourself, regardless of species.  Always leave the job to an expert pest control firm that carries out pest removal in your area.  If the snake is in your house, try to isolate it in one room by shutting doors and windows.  This not only keeps pets and kids safe, but it will also make the pest controller's job easier if the snake's location is known.

You can keep Tiger snakes away from your home by taking a few simple actions including:

  • Remove sources of food and water.  Pick up outdoor dog bowls at the end of the day and clear up bird seed from aviaries and from underneath feeders.
  • Use rodent traps or bait to keep mice and rats out of your crawl spaces and attic.  If you have a constant population of rodents on your property, ask a pest controller in your area for advice and assistance.
  • Keep your garden tidy and your grass cut short.  Remove low branches and overhanging shrubs to remove snake hidey holes and discourage prey species too.
  • Keep your outbuildings, sheds, and garage tidy and free from clutter where mice could nest.
  • Be careful when moving around your garden at night, and watch out for snakes soaking up the sun's leftover warmth on your driveway or path.

In conclusion

Mainland Tiger snakes can commonly be found in outer urban areas and around farms.  If you see a snake on your property, it's unlikely to be just passing through; snakes seek out home ranges where food is plentiful.  Follow the tips given above to deter snakes from your place and always seek the advice of an expert pest removal firm in your area if you discover a snake.

Practical Pest Control Tips That Really Work

Hi, I’m Mike and I run a small farm with my family. When I moved out of the city to start a new life a few years ago, I was looking forward to getting closer to nature and to learning how to manage some livestock and crops. Nobody warned me, however, that I’d also quickly have to learn how to manage pests – you can’t pick and choose what kind of animals and bugs you have to deal with around this place! So, a few years on and with some useful advice from my neighbours under my belt, I’ve got pretty darn good at keeping pests at bay. In the spirit of paying it back, I’ve started this blog to help people who are looking for quick and effective solutions to all kinds of pest problems.
